Teaching

As an English Language Arts teacher at an urban high school in Central Massachusetts, I worked with students to critically examine and impact their worlds. Whether analyzing themes in canonized literature, writing slam poetry about contextually-relevant topics, or researching issues on the state ballot, my students used their literacy skills to be active, engaged, and effective community members within and beyond the classroom. My students debated questions of social justice, shared their work in the wider community, and made youth-led recommendations for curricular change. I bring this same emphasis on student voice and agency to my work with pre- and in-service educators. Whether teaching educational foundations, curriculum design, or research methods, I invite students to grapple with the nexus of educational research, local and national policy, the demands of their content area, and their own conscience as justice-oriented educators. My students examine the challenges of developing and implementing engaging, academically-rigorous, and justice-oriented curriculum within and despite increasingly regulated classrooms.
